This is an
exceptionally large example of 'low' metamict Green Zircon.
We have not found a reference to a Green Zircon larger than this
recently mined gem.
Normally found in
Burma or Sri Lanka, this Green Zircon is from Madagascar, and
was brought over to Bangkok recently in rough form.
This stone has very
little birefringence, and shows almost no doubling of facet
junctions. There are some very fine and interesting
'skeletal' inclusions which can be found with a loupe.
There are also some zoning planes, including one in the bottom
of the stone which we have shown in one of the photos. It
can be seen from the backside if the stone is held at just the
right angle. All these features are very typical of 'low'
metamict Green Zircon, as is the slight haziness which can also
be observed.
Besides this
haziness, it is very fortunate that no inclusions are apparent
with the naked eye.

This cushion was
faceted and polished by an American master gem cutter with 20
years experience cutting all types of gemstones. We
decided to utilize a 'Radiant' pattern to make this stone
special, even though a step-cut cushion would have weighed more
. It was a challenge to cut and polish this stone, but the
skill and effort required is obvious in the results.
The pattern, angles, facet
junctions, and the high polish, all combine to make this a very
impressive gem.
