Tanzanite is the gemstone name for the mineral Zoisite.

Please see mineralogical information for Tanzanite here at Mindat.org.

We selected and purchased this gem for its loupe-clean clarity and the saturated deep violet-blue color.  Naturally trichroic, Tanzanite shows a range of violet to violetish-blue to blue tones.  'Block D' is the specific mine from which best stones like this one originate.

It is common for large Tanzanites to show deep color, whereas smaller stones are often lighter.  Stones like this one, not overly large, but showing top color, are always in demand and never in great supply.

Most dealers do not want to re-cut Tanzanite.  The stone is just too expensive, even at the mine site in Tanzania, and is cut primarily to result in the heaviest stone possible.  These 'native'-cut stones, however, are often off-center and mis-proportioned, as well as lacking high polish which is required for maximum brilliance.  Further, the girdles are not even or polished, adding to the difficulty and risk in setting.

When we purchased it, this stone was cut and polished poorly.  We had an experienced and skilled cutter completely re-cut and re-polish the gem, top and bottom.  Now we are proud to offer a high quality, investment-grade gem which looks fantastic and will stand out as superior to lighter-toned stones, included stones, and stones which have not been professionally re-cut.

Coated Tanzanite and synthetic Forsterite, a Tanzanite simulant, are occasionally being found in the market.  As such, we check each stone and always guarantee natural origin and authenticity of every Tanzanite we offer.
